The Idea

Arthur: Knight of the Realm is a small 3D Open World Adventure game created in Unreal Engine 4. The player takes on the Role of Arthur who has been resurrected to combat something which is threatening the world.

The game was written and designed by myself alone as a part of my final year honours project at university. It is set in a fantastical universe where magic and strange creatures prosper. The player plays as Arthur, who is resurrected by a collection of magic users at the beginning of the game and is asked to help this world as they believe that something dark has risen back into the world.

Designed as a Small Test-bed Open World RPG, 'Arthur: Knight of the Realm' was developed within university by me myself using assets acquired from the Unreal Marketplace.

Main Features
  •   NPC Dialogue system

    • Integrated with quest system (activate and progress quests)

  • Small Open explorable world

    • certain areas locked by quest progression

My Contribution

I was the Sole Developer of this project, meaning that I designed all aspects of the game myself with the exception of 3D modelling and animation, all 3D assets used where created by Synty Studios ( http://syntystudios.com/ ), And two animation packs that were used the Sword Animset Pro by Kobold and the Idles and Gestures by Moonshine Studio LLC. As the Sole developer I assembled all of the levels within the game, programmed all of the games features, systems and set pieces, and designed the games world and story from the ground up within a 4 month time period.

Due to these time constraints certain areas of the game were not completed fully and were left in a bare bones state, namely the combat system. This game also utilised a freely available plugin for Unreal Engine for the Dialogue system within the game.

For this project 9 separate levels were created in varying sizes and levels of detail, for the most part they are accessible in a linear fashion through the games questline, however after you have accessed them the first time they can be accessed at any time. The levels include:

  • Ritual Cave (the games starting location)

  • Overworld (the level which connects all of the other levels together

  • The City (the primary hub of the game which the player encounters the most friendly NPC's)

  • The Throne Room (accessible through the City, plays a role in the games story and is home to the King)

  • The Mines (an intermediary level which connects to the next level)

  • The Mine Ruins (a primary focus of the games storyline)

  • The Ancient Ruins (a solid rock fortress in the side of a mountain near the city)

  • The Ice Caverns (the ice pass which connects the games kingdom with a hostile nation, houses an ancient tomb)

  • The Southern Passage (a cavern pass connecting the kingdom to the south, houses the last of the ancient tombs)
